Number Plates, Done Legally

Number plates in the UK have rules. Not complicated ones. Just clear ones.

They exist for one reason: plates must be readable, by people and by cameras.

The non-negotiables

  • Plates must be reflective, with solid black characters on a white front and yellow rear.
  • They must use the official Charles Wright 2001 font, with correct sizing and spacing, and display the supplier details and BS AU 145e mark.
  • If we print it, it meets every one of these. No grey areas.

Where people get caught out

  • Most issues come from small tweaks, spacing adjusted to spell a word, stylised fonts, shaded lettering, patterned backgrounds, screws placed through characters, unofficial logos.
  • If it makes the plate harder to read, it won't pass. We don't bend the rules. Even if you ask.

What's perfectly legal

  • Upgrades are fine when done properly. You can have 3D or 4D raised characters in solid black, approved UK flags and identifiers, a green flash on zero-emission vehicles, and a slim single-colour border up to 5mm.
  • Clean always ages better. Compliant always avoids hassle.

Spacing

  • Spacing isn't cosmetic, it's regulated. Character height is 79mm, width 44mm, stroke width 14mm, with 11mm between characters, 33mm between groups and 11mm margins. Motorcycle sizing differs slightly but follows the same principle.
  • We won't print illegal spacing. Full stop.

Historic vehicles

If your vehicle was registered before 1 January 1973, you can use black and silver plates. Some vehicles up to 1980 qualify if registered as Historic.

Fitting them properly

  • Plates must be securely attached, adhesive strips are recommended. Screws are allowed but must not distort the characters. Plates can't sit in the window.
  • Fit once. Fit properly.

Why it's worth getting right

  • Non-compliant plates can mean a fine of up to £1,000, an MOT failure or registration withdrawal. Or just an awkward roadside conversation.
  • It's easier to start compliant.
  • We print them properly. Clean, legal, no drama.
